Giving Back in 2025: Building the Future of Defense Manufacturing Through Education, Workforce, and Community Partnerships

At the Parts Life, Inc. and DeVal Lifecycle Support, servant leadership and giving back is the foundation of our organization. Our mission is serving the warfighter and the U.S. taxpayer in a way that glorifies God, and that mission shapes the work we do in supporting our customers, suppliers, and communities. We are guided by one vision: transforming lives by creating work in an environment where people can achieve their God-given potential, and by our core values to innovate, accelerate, and empower. From our CEO to our interns, our teams understand that supporting others, creating opportunity, and giving back are an integral part of who we are, working together side-by-side every day to transform our people, our communities, and beyond.

For the past ten years, the Parts Life, Inc. family of companies has supported Catholic Social Services Visitation Homes in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. This annual holiday outreach provides meals, gifts, and groceries to women and children in the program. Visitation Homes, a ministry of Catholic Social Services, offers safe, affordable housing for women transitioning from homelessness to independent living, serving up to 20 families at a time. The program supports mothers as they work toward long-term stability through employment, job training, and educational opportunities while raising their children in a secure environment. Teams from Parts Life, Inc. and DeVal Lifecycle Support travel to Kensington to personally deliver gifts and groceries and to prepare and serve a warm holiday meal to residents. Led by Vice President of Business Development Jeannie Whitfield with support from Strategic Engagement Coordinator Mya Thevanayagam, this effort engages directly with the women and children in the program, providing comfort and cheer in the holiday season.

The event featured a panel discussion on Women in Advanced Manufacturing led by Vice President of Business Development Jeannie Whitfield, with panelists Por Por Chhuor, Quality Assurance Manager, Denisia Washington-McCray, Welder, Maureen Hettel, Contracts Manager, Melissa Tarte, SHRM-CP, Human Resources Manager, Zhané Bennett, Human Resources Coordinator and Marine Reservist, and Deanna Earle, Accounting Manager, who shared perspectives spanning the shop floor to senior leadership on mentorship, technical growth, and long-term careers in defense manufacturing, reflecting both DeVal’s legacy and its future.

Parts Life, Inc. is building a partnership with the Burlington County Institute of Technology and its School of Engineering to connect students with real-world, work-based learning experiences. The collaboration focuses on aligning classroom instruction with current defense manufacturing practices, giving students exposure to the same advanced equipment and processes used in industry today. Through facility tours, campus visits, and direct engagement with Parts Life engineers, students gain insight into technical career pathways and day-to-day engineering operations. This partnership supports workforce development by strengthening the regional talent pipeline and preparing students for skilled roles within the defense industrial base.

We’re also proud to support education and technical skills development for students across the Philadelphia region. DeVal Lifecycle Support’s involvement with Ben Franklin High School’s Advanced Manufacturing Center includes mentorship and engagement that strengthen hands-on learning for students pursuing manufacturing careers. We hosted senior welding and machining students for a tour of our Philadelphia manufacturing facility through our workforce development partnership within the Navy Talent Pipeline, with tours led by Director of Quality Derrick Whitfield Jr. and Welding Instructor and Supervisor Moses DeHart. Students received an inside look at welding, CNC machining, quality assurance, and non-destructive testing, along with program overviews supporting the CH-53K and submarine programs, including demonstrations from Assembly Manager Gary Smith. The visit concluded with a discussion on DeVal’s workplace culture, career growth opportunities, and a Q&A session with Jonathan Mullins, Kayla Akinset, and Tyleem Langston, a former Ben Franklin CNC student now employed at DeVal, connecting classroom learning to real-world manufacturing careers.

DeVal Lifecycle Support also attended the opening of Father Judge High School’s new welding laboratory in Philadelphia as part of the school’s Career and Technical Education program focused on preparing students for skilled careers in manufacturing and the trades. DeVal’s welding leadership, including Welding Instructor and Supervisor Moses DeHart, participated in the opening to engage with students and faculty and highlight the role of skilled trades in today’s manufacturing environment. The new laboratory provides a dedicated, hands-on learning space equipped with industry-relevant tools and technology, supporting technical proficiency, safety awareness, and practical experience aligned with modern manufacturing capabilities. DeVal has supported Father Judge’s welding program for several years and continues to hire graduates from the school, with the program serving as an important pipeline for workforce readiness within the regional manufacturing sector and the broader defense industrial base.

DeVal Lifecycle Support hosted students from St. Hubert Catholic High School for Girls for a manufacturing tour highlighting HUBZone career opportunities on October 8. Located just up the road from DeVal, St. Hubert has long been part of the local talent ecosystem that supports manufacturing and technical career pathways within the City of Philadelphia. The visit showcased real-world manufacturing environments and career options available within a HUBZone, connecting classroom learning to industry application across DeVal’s manufacturing capabilities. The relationship is especially meaningful as one of DeVal’s legacy employees, Maureen Hettel, began her career through St. Hubert’s program 37 years ago. We are proud to continue supporting St. Hubert and investing in workforce development opportunities for young women in our local HUBZone community.

"In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" Acts 20:35

“‘There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say,’ returned the nephew. ‘Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round—apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that—as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!‘” Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol
