Strategic Bomber Sustainment: Resolving Obsolescence Across the B-1B, B-2 and B-52
Sustaining the U.S. Air Force bomber fleet is a component-level readiness mission. The B-1B Lancer, B-2 Spirit and B-52 Stratofortress depend on thousands of mechanical, electrical and electromechanical parts developed and qualified across decades of service.
As these weapon systems continue operating across extended lifecycles, sustainment organizations encounter diminishing manufacturing sources, obsolete materials, discontinued OEM support, unavailable tooling and incomplete technical data. A single unresolved component can interrupt the supply chain and affect weapon system availability.
Parts Life, Inc. works alongside the Defense Logistics Agency, Air Force engineering authorities and supporting Engineering Support Activities to convert these requirements into qualified, manufacturable solutions. Through reverse engineering, Technical Data Package development, prototype integration, testing and Source Approval Request support, Parts Life helps establish alternate sources of supply for critical bomber components.
Current bomber source-development efforts include a transformer rectifier supporting the B-2, a toggle switch supporting the B-52 and a fluid filter supporting the B-1B.
Closing the Gap Between Obsolescence and Operational Readiness
Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages, or DMSMS, can create a significant sustainment gap when a component remains operationally required but lacks an executable procurement pathway.
Parts Life applies its proprietary R.O.P.E.® Rapid Obsolescence Planning & Execution methodology to evaluate the complete requirement before production begins. The process identifies the technical, material, manufacturing, qualification and acquisition actions needed to move an obsolete requirement toward an approved source of supply.
R.O.P.E.® works alongside the Parts Life 5R Solution:
- Reverse Engineer
- Remanufacture
- Repair
- Recertify
- Replicate
Based on the condition and sustainment requirement, Parts Life can evaluate physical samples, reconcile legacy engineering data, identify replacement materials and processes, develop a complete Technical Data Package, manufacture prototypes and first articles while supporting the testing required for source approval.
This integrated engineering and manufacturing model produces tangible results: manufacturable data, validated hardware and a repeatable production pathway.
B-2 Spirit Sustainment Past Performance
Parts Life has supported B-2 requirements across flight controls, environmental controls, landing gear and the Defensive Management System.
Rectifier Assembly: Flight Control System
Parts Life reverse engineered and developed a replacement rectifier assembly supporting the B-2 flight control system. Qualification activities included electromagnetic interference compliance, explosive-atmosphere validation and functional cycle testing.
Cockpit Pressure Sensor: Environmental Control System
The team reverse engineered a cockpit pressure sensor used to monitor environmental control conditions based on altitude. Specialty and functional testing validated the replacement component’s performance against system requirements.
Specialty Landing Gear Bolts
Parts Life reverse engineered and replicated critical landing gear bolts using a forging process that maintained continuous grain flow. This manufacturing approach supported applicable shock-absorption and structural reliability requirements.
Defensive Management System Wiring Harnesses
Working with the supporting ESA, Parts Life obtained samples and supplemented incomplete technical data through reverse engineering. Prototype wiring harnesses were manufactured and delivered for government testing and verification in support of source approval.
The effort also included an expedited prototype supporting an urgent aircraft-down requirement.
B-1B Lancer Sustainment Past Performance
B-1B sustainment efforts have addressed fluid-control components, obsolete electronics and radio-frequency assemblies.
Hydraulic Filter Element
Parts Life reverse engineered, developed and prototyped a hydraulic filter element supporting the B-1B. Engineers reconciled discrepancies between legacy drawings and fielded hardware before completing functional testing to validate compatibility and performance in support of source approval.
Obsolete Electronic and RF Components
Parts Life has supported radio-frequency amplifiers, actuated pressure switches and related subassemblies affected by obsolete electrical components.
Engineering teams developed hybrid solutions using currently available components configured to replicate legacy performance while maintaining compatibility with the original enclosures and system requirements.
B-52 Stratofortress and Propulsion Sustainment Past Performance
Parts Life has supported B-52 and strategic propulsion requirements through reverse engineering, material replacement, source development and manufacturing.
Air-Launched Cruise Missile F107 Engine Inlet Seal
Parts Life reverse engineered and qualified the F107 Engine Inlet Seal, establishing the company as an alternate approved source supporting the Air-Launched Cruise Missile program.
The effort included:
- Reconstructing incomplete legacy two-dimensional drawings
- Developing three-dimensional models to support engineering and production
- Identifying and qualifying a replacement vapor-barrier coating
- Manufacturing prototype hardware
- Completing First Article Testing at Tinker Air Force Base
- Progressing the component through source qualification
During qualification testing, the replacement coating demonstrated improved performance compared with the legacy coating. The seal protects the engine from debris and moisture while securing the air intake during launch.
ALCM Ram Fin and Elevon Barrel Seals
Parts Life qualified as an approved source for the ALCM Ram Fin Seals and Elevon Barrel Seals through the DLA Small Business Innovation Program. DLA publicly identifies these efforts as examples of small-business source development supporting the nuclear enterprise. DLA’s SBIP program is designed to develop technologies and sources that improve support across DLA-managed supply chains.
TF33 Engine Components
Parts Life has also reverse engineered and manufactured legacy engine components supporting TF33 propulsion sustainment for the B-52.
Manufacturable Technical Data Built for Production
Reverse engineering must produce data that can be executed during manufacturing, inspection, qualification and future procurement.
Parts Life develops complete, manufacturable Technical Data Packages that can include:
- Two-dimensional engineering drawings
- Three-dimensional models
- Material and process specifications
- Manufacturing instructions
- Inspection and testing requirements
- Qualification criteria
- Source documentation
Within the Parts Life Prototype Integration Facility, engineering, manufacturing and quality teams connect technical data development to physical hardware. Dimensional inspection, 3D scanning, material analysis, digital modeling, prototype manufacturing and form, fit and function validation provide a connected path from incomplete data to a production-ready technical baseline.
This work is performed under Parts Life’s ISO 9001 and AS9100D-certified quality management system, including AS9100D Section 8.3 Design and Development.
Maintaining Line of Sight Through Source Development
Bomber source-development projects require continued coordination among Parts Life, DLA, Air Force engineering authorities and the supporting ESA.
Parts Life maintains monthly status calls on current bomber efforts, providing consistent line of sight into technical findings, prototype development, testing activities, open actions and upcoming decisions. This communication keeps program stakeholders aligned as the requirement progresses toward qualification and source approval.
When technical challenges arise, customers receive a clear view of the issue, the corrective path and the next required action.
Expanding the Qualified Supply Base
Since 2020, Parts Life has received 360+ Source Approval Request approvals.
A SAR package provides the technical and quality evidence required for the government to evaluate a prospective source for a restricted-source item. DLA’s official guidance explains that the process is intended to demonstrate a supplier’s ability to manufacture the item to the required level of quality.
Each approved source creates an opportunity to:
- Increase competition
- Reduce sole-source exposure
- Restore access to obsolete components
- Improve material availability
- Establish repeatable production
- Strengthen supply chain resilience
- Support fleet readiness and operational availability
The B-1B, B-2 and B-52 continue to perform critical long-range strike and strategic deterrence missions. Parts Life supports those missions by bringing engineering, technical data development, prototype integration, qualification and manufacturing together under one sustainment model.
