Parts Life, Inc.: Pioneering Sustainable Manufacturing through Advanced Technologies and Processes

At Parts Life, Inc., our mission, as a leading provider of reverse engineering services, technical data packages, and source approvals for high-quality parts and components in the aerospace and defense industry, is to support the warfighter and U.S. taxpayer. A huge component to our business is supporting our customer’s goals and objectives, from increasing mission readiness rates to actively developing sustainable manufacturing practices.

Driven by our commitment to the Department of Defense (DOD) Directive on Advanced Manufacturing, PLI has adopted advanced technologies and innovative processes, enabling us to deliver products with exceptional quality, performance, and reliability. By incorporating cutting-edge technologies, such as 3D printing and additive manufacturing, we minimized waste and improved accuracy, showcasing our dedication to sustainability and compliance with the DOD Directive on Advanced Manufacturing.

To reduce waste and increase the longevity of our products, we have established sustainable systems encompassing a variety of practices. These practices range from extending product life and managing consumables to focusing on preventative maintenance and making data-driven decisions in engineering design. Our advanced manufacturing capabilities, which include component analysis, testing of sub-assemblies and assemblies, and engineering design for manufacturability, reinforce our dedication to sustainable manufacturing.

One of the ways we support sustainability is through our reverse engineering services for Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS). Many times, a DMSMS part is unavailable because the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) no longer exists. The technical data package may be missing, incomplete, or include materials that are no longer being produced. Through processes such as R.O.P.E. (Rapid Obsolescence Planning and Execution) and OREA (Obsolescence Resolution Engineering Analysis), our engineering and manufacturing teams generate accurate technical data packages that facilitate the reproduction of otherwise unavailable parts. This approach helps to avoid scrapping entire systems due to a single unavailable component, ultimately conserving resources, and encouraging sustainable practices within the industry.

Remanufacturing is a key component of Parts Life, Inc.'s 5R Solution (Reverse Engineer, Remanufacture, Recertify, Repair, Replicate), and plays an essential role in promoting sustainable manufacturing practices. Remanufacturing aligns with the DoD's sustainable manufacturing goals, offering tangible environmental and economic benefits. By extending the life of military equipment, the need for new procurement is minimized and consumption of valuable resources is reduced.

In 2022, our remanufacturing efforts led to the repair of nearly 100 missile launchers for the Navy’s F/A-18 program, reusing more than 4,000 lbs. of aluminum and titanium. This not only conserved materials but also prevented 77,000 lbs. of carbon emissions, significantly reducing our carbon footprint.

Parts Life, Inc.’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services contribute to the overall sustainability of military operations. MROs help prolong the operational life of machinery and equipment by performing regular maintenance, timely repairs, and necessary overhauls. This extension of the equipment's lifespan reduces the need for new machinery, resulting in conserving resources, minimizing waste, and lowering the environmental impact of manufacturing operations. These services play a critical role in achieving higher mission readiness rates for the DoD, as well-maintained equipment is less likely to experience costly breakdowns or failures. Our investment in comprehensive MRO services helps support the DoD in its sustainable manufacturing goals while simultaneously improving the performance and longevity of vital military assets.

With an emphasis on quality control and continuous improvement, Parts Life, Inc. ensures our products surpass the standards set by the DOD Directive on Advanced Manufacturing. By collaborating with customers and understanding their unique needs and requirements, we are constantly refining our products and processes through continuous improvement. Our remanufacturing services rejuvenate items to a zero-time used state, eliminating the demand for new asset purchases. We also apply value-added engineering during the remanufacturing process to fortify assets, extending their use beyond their expected lifecycle.

By committing ourselves to advanced technologies, reverse engineering for DMSMS, remanufacturing, MRO services, and sustainable systems, Parts Life, Inc. has emerged as a leader in championing sustainable manufacturing. Through valuing resource conservation, waste reduction, and continuous improvement, we aim to make a lasting, positive impact on the environment.

Parts Life, Inc. is a certified AS9100D engineering service provider, manufacturer, and alternate source supplier for DMSMS and obsolete replacement components on military systems and subsystems. Our value-added reverse engineering processes address missing or incomplete technical data needed prior to manufacturing. Services, such as R.O.P.E.® (Rapid Obsolescence Planning and Execution) and 5R® (Reverse Engineering, Remanufacturing, Recertify, Repair, Replicate) deliver manufacturable data with source approval to manufacture replacement parts. In our Prototype Integration Facility, parts and components are manufactured and tested for form, fit, and function to ensure each piece meets and surpasses OEM requirements. Our electronic, electric, and electrical manufacturing capabilities include wiring harnesses and electronic test sets.
